Il Messia

(VOICES OF PEOPLE

AND CRIES OF ANIMALS)

[In the XI century B.C., the tribes

of Israel, which had escaped..]

[..slavery in the

land of Egypt,..]

[..after forty years of

wandering in the desert..]

[..under the leadership of Moses

reached the Promised Land..]

[..and established themselves

in the valley of Canaan.]

(SUBDUED VOICES)

(CRIES OF ANIMALS)

Child: No!

(DESPERATE CRIES)

(INDISTINCT VOICES)

My brothers, each father must

give his heart to his children

By giving his heart to his children

he will also give them life,..

..his experience, his

protection, love

To live in harmony with the

Eternal and in peace with Him..

..and with his brothers, the father

must give his heart..

..to his children

and must listen to their worries.

Man 1: We have always lived

and live following this rule

Man 1 : And we have always

punished the transgressor thereof

Man 2: According to this holy rule

we crossed the desert,..

..comforted along the path by

the lead of Moses, our father.

Man 2: We suffered all kinds of

privations, sustained only..

..by the faith of our fathers,

by the rules that make us brothers

..by the promise of reaching the

Promised Land.

Man 3: And we came from the

ancient pact with the Eternal.

Man 3: We raised our tents,

pastured the flocks in peace..

..and brotherhood as ever.

But the Philistines assaulted us,..

..killed our children,

raided our cattle,..

..obstructed our work,

took our defensive weapons..

..and even the stone to sharpen

the plough and the axes for the wood.

They live in their cities,

rich and arrogant,..

..lead by warrior kings.

They have money and embroidered dresses,..

..fat cattle and stone houses.

Man 2: And as always,

we want to give the heart..

.. to our children, but also

serenity, the possibility..

..of working in peace,

the safety of being protected.

Man 4: We want to give them cities

strong with walls and forts,..

..and with stone houses

as those of the Philistines.

Man 4: We want our wandering

to be over.

Man 4: We want to raise

a temple to the Eternal,..

..here, in the land

that He promised to us.

Man 2: We want a king, Samuel,

as all the nations.

A king that may judge us and lead us.

Samuel: My brothers,

there is no king for our people.

And each of us in Israel

may do what seems most right to him.

There is no king that orders

or judgeth, because men's judgement..

..is often untruthful.

There is no king in Israel,..

..but the brother, judging the

brother, judgeth himself..

..and acts for good.

There is no king in Israel..

..because the king of Israel is the

Eternal, Who freed us from slavery.

He alone is perfection and He alone

may judge and order.

As our father Moses did,

I will bow down before Him..

..to ask for counsel and light.

I asked the Eternal and He told

me "Hearken to the voice.."

"of the people in all that

they say to thee. For they.."

"have not rejected thee, but me,

that I should not reign over them".

"According to what they have done from

when I brought them out of Egypt,.."

"as they have forsaken me, and

served strange gods.."

"so do they also unto thee.

Therefore, hearken to their voice:"

"but yet testify to them,

and foretell them"

"the right of the king.."

"that shall reign over

the people of Israel".

This will be the right of the

king that shall reign over you.

He will take your sons

and pit them in his army,..

..to run before his

royal chariot

To be his tribunes, and his

centurions, and to plough his fields..

..and to reap his corn,

and to make him..

..arms and chariots.

Your daughters also he will take..

..to make him ointments,

to anoint his body,..

..to light the fire in

his kitchens,..

..to bake the bread

for his table.

And he will take your fields,

and your vineyards,..

..and your best olive yards

..and give them to his servants.

Moreover he will take the tenth

..of your corn, and of the revenues

of your vineyards..

..and crops to

give to his servants.

Your servants also, and handmaids,

and your goodliest young men,..

and your asses, he will take away,

and put them to his work.

Your flocks also he will tithe,..

..and you shall be his servants.

And you shall cry out in that

day from the face of the king,..

..whom you have chosen to yourselves:

and the Eternal will not hear you in that day,

..nor hearken to your cry.

Man 4: There shall be a king over us

And we also will be..

..like all nations.

This is our will.

Man 4: There shall be a king over us

who shall judge us, and go..

..out before us

and fight our battles for us.

Once again you have

betrayed our Lord.

Then at your expenses

you shall know what meaneth..

..to be subject to a king's will.

[By the will of the tribes of

Israel, Saul was anointed king.]

Saul: Whoever will not exit his

tent and follow..

..to battle his king, Saul, he will

see his cattle treated as such

(BELLOWING)

(shouting) Say it to all!

(shouting) To all!

[So Saul was the first king of Israel.

He was a great king, but like the kings..]

[..of the other nations, he used

his power with arrogance..]

[..and lead the meek shepherds

of Israel to war.]

(CRIES OF WAR)

[From the time of Samuel,

kings succeeded to kings,..]

[..wars to wars,

tears to tears.]

[There were great kings and small kings,

but all sought luxury and power.]

[The kingdom became so big

that king Solomon had..]

[..to divide it among the tribes

and so the tribes of Judas..]

[..took the arms

against the tribes of Israel.]

[For the first time, brothers

killed brothers.]

[And again other kings came and

all, by the power of the crown,..]

[..transgressed, yet their

tombs have no crown..]

[..but dung for a bed and

worms for a litter.]

[Death, destruction, exile,

corruption, war, this is..]

[..what the kings brought.

But for a thousand years, the prophets..]

[..have fostered the hope

among the humble people of Israel,..]

[..of a just king, a Messiah

who will inevitably come..]

[..because the Eternal promised.]

Physician: One moment and I am finished.

(HEROD GROANS)

Physician: Thou wilt feel relief.

They have just arrived today:

..webs from Cuma

soaked in pure honey from Nemi.

(HEROD GROANS)

Herod: And so?

Soldier: The spies have

never lost sight of them.

They were seen in Caesarea

and Jericho, they are wise men,..

..princes, astrologers and say

that mysterious signs lead..

..them to Judea to

find the new king.

Another king in my lands?

Yea, the king of kings, they say,

the Messiah.

Herod: What do Scriptures say

about this Messiah?

Where should he be born?

Secretary: In Bethlehem of Juda.

For so it is written by the prophet:

"And thou Bethlehem the land of Juda

art not the least among the princes

for out of thee shall come forth the

captain that shall rule

..my people, Israel".

Herod: We are honoured by your

presence in Jerusalem.

Herod: What sign have you seen

of the new born king?

Wise Man: We saw a star brighter

than the rest..

..so that the rest disappeared

From this prodigy we understood..

..that a king had been born in Israel

and we came to homage him.

Go and diligently inquire

after the child,

and when you have found him,

bring me word again, that I also..

..may come and adore him.

(HEROD WHISPERS)

Wise King: Gold for thy kingdom,

incense for thy divinity,..

..myrrh, the bitterest herb,

from which an ointment is made..

..to anoint corpses,

for thy suffering.

Angel: Beware of Herod, take the

child and his mother, and fly.

(CRIES OF WOMEN

AND WAILING OF BABIES)

(HEROD GROANS)

He is worsening by the hour.

He cannot sleep anymore.

The pain is insufferable.

We must do something.

Yesterday he cried all night.

We tried any cure,

but he could not endure

..even baths in sulphurous water.

Yesterday he collapsed twice.

There is nothing else to do.

We must continue with foot baths.

..of scalding water and cinder.

(HEROD GASPS)

(HEROD CRIES)

Crowd: Herod is dead!

Come, come!

(UPROARS OF THE CROWD)

(agonising) They wanted my death.

They rejoiced for my death.

But Herod is alive. Alive!

The two heads of the

rebellion shall be burnt alive.

My son, Antipater,

who desired my throne,..

..shall be choked.

(panting) And whoever

took part in the rebellion..

..shall be strangled.

And the high priest shall

be deposed in infamy.

I want all the most

illustrious men of my kingdom

..to be all gathered.

Scholars, priests, teachers,

they shall all be gathered right now.

To be executed

when I die.

I want tears for my death.

(MURMURING OF THE CROWD)

Child (shouting): Herod is dead!

(CONFUSED SHOUTS)

(CRIES OF ANIMALS)

[After the death of Herod the Great,

internal struggles tore Israel.]

[Herod the Great was the last king.

Then, Rome divided the country..]

[into four tetrarchies and kept

direct control over the city..]

[..of Jerusalem, but each year

the faithful would make..]

[..a pilgrimage to the holy

city during the festivities.]

[The chosen people would pray

in the temple of the fathers..]

[..and humbly hope and faithfully

wait for the coming of the Messiah,..]

[..the king promised by the prophets.

That king who would have killed..]

[..the tyrants with his flaming

sword and satisfied..]

[..the thirst for justice of

the nations.]

(MURMURING AND CRIES OF ANIMALS)

(CRIES OF CHILDREN)

Mary: Today it is a very

important day for thee.

Today thou art a man and mayest

enter the house of the Eternal.

Blessed be His name.

For the first time thou wilt

offer a sacrifice to Him.

Take, this is thy tallit.

Knowest thou what a tallit be?

A thousand years ago, our people

were slaves in Egypt,..

..until the day when Moses,

our father, freed them.

And for forty years, under the sun

and the rain, our people..

..walked having only a white

wool shawl as shelter.

Henceforth each man

of Israel hath his tallit

From today thou also art a man

and with thy head covered

by thy tallit, thou mayest

speak with doctors and teachers

..who studied holy law.

For from today thou belongest

..to the law, my son.

And the law belongeth to thee.

- Joseph: Shall we go?

- Mary: Yea.

Are those with the red cloak

Caesar's soldiers?

Yea, and we must obey

their orders.

Are they the masters of Jerusalem?

Jerusalem hath no masters.

There are neither masters..

..nor servants here,

only the Eternal is master.

Child: But we give

tithes to the Romans.

Elder: Not only to the Romans.

It is a tribute that is divided..

..between them and the priests.

This is the Court of the Gentiles,

where we shall buy the lamb..

..for the sacrifice.

Joseph: Come. Shall we go?

(BLEATING OF SHEEP)

(RELIGIOUS CHANT)

(BLARING OF TRUMPET)

(CHILDREN SINGING A RHYME)

Man 1 : Blessed be

the blood of the grape.

Man 2: Blessed be

the blood of the grape.

Man 3: Blessed be

the blood of the grape.

Man 4: Blessed be

the blood of the grape.

Man 3: Blessed be

the blood of the grape.

(CHILDREN KEEP

SINGING A RHYME)

Mary: Joseph,

I cannot see the child!

(frightened) Where can he be?

Is he lost?

Ask whether somebody saw him.

Didst thou find him?

No one saw him?

Joseph: No.

- Mary: Did you see our son?

- Man: No.

- Mary: Did you see our son?

- Old woman: No, I did not.

- Joseph: Didst thou see my son?

- No, no.

- Mary: Did you see our son?

- No.

To the temple! Thou wilt see

him there. He must be there.

Doctor: For thus it was

written in holy law.

Moses called all the ancients

of Israel and said to them...

Mary: Joseph!

Doctor:... "Go take a lamb

by your families..."

"and sacrifice the Phase."

"And dip a bunch of hyssop"

"in the blood that is at the door"

Joseph: Excuse me.

Peace to you.

Son, why hast thou done so to us?

We have sought thee everywhere.

How is it that you sought me?

Did you not know that I must be

about my father's business?

Doctor: ...seeing the blood,

your strength will skip...

- Man: Peace.

- Men: Peace to you.

- Woman: Are you pilgrims?

- Youth: Yes.

Whither go you?

By the Jordan. There is a prophet

preaching penance.

- Youth: The time hath come.

- Woman: What time?

What? Knowest thou not?

The Messiah is about to come.

Who is this Messiah?

A king, a great king, the king of kings.

Hast thou some water?

Here.

Youth: Thank thee.

Man: Thus promised the prophets

"From the throne of David.."

"a rod shall rise up out

of his roots".

Thus spoke Isaias:

"He shall judge the poor...

"with justice, and shall reprove with

equity the meek of the earth".

"and he shall strike the earth with the

rod of his mouth, and with the breath"

"of his lips he shall slay the wicked."

And all the peoples will be brothers.

The wings of love

will shelter all men.

(angry) Ye brood of vipers!

Who hath shewed you to flee

from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy

of penance: and do not begin to say,

We have Abraham for our father.

For I say unto you that God is able..

..of these stones, to raise

up children to Abraham.

For now the axe is laid to the root

of the trees.

Every tree therefore that bringeth not forth

good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.

Man 1 : What then shall we do?

He that hath two coats, let him

give to him that hath none;

and he that hath meat,

let him do in like manner.

Man 2: Master, what shall we do?

Baptist: You, publicans,

tax collectors,..

Do nothing more than that

which is appointed you.

Soldier: And what shall we

soldiers do?

Do violence to no man,

neither calumniate any man;

and be content with your pay.

Man 3: Yea, wash us from

our impurities.

We merchants have

been greedy and grasping.

We have seen our people cry

in poverty while we..

..have kept growing richer.

Man 1 : Cleanse us with baptism.

Man 2: Hear us, O Lord, cleanse

us from our iniquities..

..for we took advantage of the

authority given from the law.

..to exact taxes larger than

due and grow fat..

..on our brothers. .

Baptist: Come and wash

your sins.

Soldier: John, wash our

souls with this water..

..for we betrayed the

innocent for money.

Baptist: I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I ought to be baptized by thee,..

..and comest thou to me?

Suffer it to be so now. For so

it becometh us to fulfil all justice.

Baptist: I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

I baptize thee in

water unto penance.

- It is he!

- He who?

I tell thee it is he, John

said it, I heard him.

He said: "Behold the Lamb of God

who taketh away the sin of the world".

This is he of whom I said.

It is he, Simon, he is the Messiah!

I am Andrew. Rememberest me thou?

We met yesterday.

And the other day.

I too heard the Baptist.

Thou art Simon the son of Jona.

Thou shalt be called Peter.

How long did it take you?

Andrew: Yea, we are late,

but look, look.

If we ought to arrive to Jerusalem

the road is long..

..and we are many who ought to eat.

'Tis well. I understood.

Philip: We have found him.

The Baptist shewed him to us.

And who would this Messiah be?

His name is Jesus, the son

of Joseph of Nazareth.

Of Nazareth? Can any thing of

good come from Nazareth?

..from that miserable

pile of hovels?

Come and see.

Behold an Israelite indeed,

in whom there is no guile.

Whence knowest thou me?

Before that Philip called

thee, when thou wast..

under the fig tree,

I saw thee.

Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God.

Thou art the King of Israel.

Because I said unto thee, I saw

thee under the fig tree, thou believest?

(CROWD NOISES)

It is written, "My house shall

be called the house of prayer.."

"..to all nations,"

but you have made it..

a den of thieves!

(CROWD UPROARS)

Apostle (angry): Profane people,

out of the house of the Lord!

Apostles: Go, go away!

Out from hence, out!

Give me to drink.

How dost thou, being a

Jew; ask of me to drink, who am..

..a Samaritan woman?

If thou didst know the gift of God and who

he is that saith to thee: Give me to drink;

thou perhaps wouldst have asked of

him, and he would have given thee

living water.

Thou hast nothing wherein to draw,

and the well is deep.

From whence then hast thou spring water?

Jesus: Whosoever drinketh of this water

shall thirst again.

but he that shall drink of the water that

I will give him shall not thirst for ever.

Give me this water, that I may not

thirst..

nor come hither to draw.

Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

I have no husband.

Thou hast said well: I have no husband.

For thou hast had five husbands.

And he whom thou now hast is not

thy husband.

Jesus: This, thou hast said truly.

But thou art a master,

a seer, a prophet.

We Samaritans say that the holy

place is on this mountain,..

..and you Jews say that at

Jerusalem is the holy place.

Who is right?

Woman, believe me that the hour

cometh, when you shall neither

nor in Jerusalem, adore the Father.

But the hour cometh and now is,

when the true adorers..

..shall adore the Father in

spirit and in truth.

God is a spirit: and they that adore

him must adore him in spirit and in truth.

I know that the Messiah cometh

who will tell us all things.

I am he, who am speaking with thee.

Samaritan woman: Come, and see a man who

has told me all things whatsoever I have done.

Run!

Wait, he is sleeping.

What is it? Speak.

Man: Jesus of Nazareth too

baptizes and his train

..is more numerous of what....

You yourselves do bear me witness

that I said that I am not the Messiah

but that I am sent before him.

- Man: Yes, Rabbi.

- Baptist: Then you understand not?

My joy is fulfilled. He must

increase: but I must decrease.

Baptist: Not to me, but to our

brothers poorer than me.

Woman: Thou shalt give them, Rabbi.

Thou knowest what is right.

Baptist: Thank thee.

(TINKLING OF BELLS)

Soldier: Give way! Canst thou

see?

I see the shame of our land.

Shall I give way to it?

Soldier: Thou art a mad man!

Catch him!

Out of the way, beggar!

Step aside to Herodias,..

..wife of Herod Antipas,

our sovereign.

Baptist (shouting): No,

not wife. Concubine!

Soldier (angry): Take him away!

She is your sovereign's

concubine.

Soldier: Quiet!

Take him away!

Baptist: It is a sin!

The king of the Jews..

..lies with his brother's

wife!

Soldier: Take him away!

Baptist: Herod put away his

wife and violated..

..all laws! Shame,

corruption, and uncleanness..

..have made their nest in

the king's court!

A calamity shall fall upon

the children of Israel.

Cleanse yourselves from your sins,

do penance!

Blot out the abomination

from the court of Herod!

People of Israel,

wash your sins!

King of Israel,

cover thy head with ashes..

..and do penance!

Man: Herod Antipas,

the captain of the guards is here.

So?

Captain: He was shouting in the streets

violent accusations against thee..

..and against Herodias, at the

very gate of the fortress.

People had assembled.

We tried to stop him.

..but he was shouting ever louder

and we were compelled to arrest him.

But why did he do that?

No man dared to speak.

Neither the Council,

nor the High Priest..

..nor the doctors of the law,

nor the Pharisees.

Why he?

What is it to him?

What doth it profit him?

John the Baptist.

His fame came to me.

A teacher, they say, a prophet.

What didst thou do it?

Who sent thee?

Wash thyself of thy sins.

I am thy king, I have no sins.

A king hath no sins.

My king is in the heavens.

He is the only king.

Thou art a man and a sinner.

And hast thou the courage

to speak to me so?

I only say the truth. It takes

no courage to speak the truth.

What thou didst can make thee

die. Knowest thou this?

Why didst thou do it?

To live, to live in the truth.

"It is good to give praise to the Lord:

and to sing to thy name,"

"O most High."

"To shew forth thy mercy in the morning,

and thy truth in the night."

"Upon an instrument of ten strings, upon the

psaltery: with a canticle upon the harp."

"For thou hast given me, O Lord,

a delight in thy doings:"

"and in the works of thy

hands I shall rejoice."

Woman: Mary!

Mary! Thy son is back! He is

in the synagogue for the prayer.

They say he was in desert

praying, he is thin,..

..Sun burnt, he resembles

a prophet.

Thou shalt see how changed he is!

- Is he in the Synagogue?

- For the Sabbath prayer.

They say wonders of him.

Quick, let us go.

Priest: Blessed be the

Eternal, worthy of praise.

Faithful: Blessed be the Eternal,

worthy of praises for ever.

"The spirit of the Lord is upon me"

"Wherefore he hath anointed me"

"to preach the gospel to the poor"

"To preach deliverance to the

captives and sight to the blind"

"to set at liberty them

that are bruised,"

"to preach the acceptable year of

the Lord and the day of reward."

Jesus: This day is fulfilled

this scripture in your ears.

(THE FAITHFUL RUMBLE)

What happens to thy son? Didst thou

know thou wast a prophet's mother?

Jesus: Doubtless you will say to me this

similitude: Physician, heal thyself.

No prophet is accepted in his

own country, among his kindreds.

In truth I say to You, there were

many widows in the days of Elias..

..when heaven was shut up

three years and six months..

..when there was a great famine

And to none of them was..

..Elias sent, but to a poor widow

woman near Sidon.

And there were many lepers in Israel

in the time of Eliseus the prophet:

and none of them was cleansed

but Naaman the Syrian.

Faithful (shouting): He blasphemeth!

Out of this place!

Woman: He is a heretic!

Man: He compared himself

to Elias, to Eliseus!

Man: Come back no more!

This is not thy village any more!

All (shouting and angry):

Shame! Away, away! Go away!

All: Go away!

He is here. He hath come to look

for us to continue the preaching..

of the Baptist who is in prison.

He wants us to follow him.

His mother is here with him too.

I have decided. I shall go with him

"Come ye after me", he said, "and I

will make you to be fishers of men"

And who will provide for my family?

Mine live of my labour.

Who will take care of my family?

God, if thou have faith.

Launch out into the deep and

let down your nets for a draught.

Master, we have laboured all the

night and have taken nothing.

Andrew, James, John!

Andrew: Come, all together.

(THE DISCIPLES TOIL)

Bring the baskets!

Man: Come and see how much fish!

What a wonderful catch!

Come on!

Quick! Quick!

Publican: Mark that heap.

Publican: Come, will you?

Come on with those baskets, quick.

Andrew: It is vile. It is so

that they starve the poor.

Indeed, taxes are frightening.

And they, the publicans,..

..people of our people,

Jews by blood and religion,..

..take advantage from the power

that the Romans give them..

..to impose higher taxes.

To fatten behind those who

dare not defend themselves.

All prefer to keep them quiet

and not to risk a complaint.

Vipers!

Man: Move, move!

Andrew: I never met one who

was honest.

Andrew: They are the shame of...

Judge not: and you shall

not be judged. Condemn not:

..and you shall not be condemned.

Forgive: and you shall be forgiven.

Give: and it shall be given to you:

good measure and pressed down

and running over shall

they give into your bosom.

For with the same measure that you shall

mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.

Not every one that saith to me,

Lord, Lord, shall enter

into the kingdom of heaven: but he

that doth the will of my Father

Every one therefore that

heareth these my words,

and doth them, shall be likened

to a wise man

that built his house upon a rock,

And the rain fell, and the floods came,

and the winds blew, and they beat

upon that house, and it fell not,

for it was founded on a rock.

And every one that heareth these my words

and doth them not,

shall be like a foolish man..

..that built his house upon the sand,

And the rain fell, and the floods came,

and the winds blew, and

they beat upon that house, and it fell,

..and great was the fall thereof.

He is still there, preaching

to the people of the land!

To the people whence he came.

He speaks like a tiller.

He claims to be a teacher of the

sacred by talking of sheep,..

..of trees, of vineyards, of

how to bake bread, of how..

..they build houses.

- Child 1: Thank thee.

- Child 2: Thank thee.

Publican: Enough for now,

we shall meet after dinner.

Hail.

Jesus: Follow me.

What? What didst thou say?

Follow me, come with us.

Yea, but dinner is ready

and if thou and thy friends..

..accepted to..

He evidently ignoreth

the simplest rules.

Even children know that

their office is shameful.

A publican cannot even

bear witness in judgment.

An honest father of a family

would never give his daughter..

..in marriage to one of them.

A prophet doth not embrace

the dung.

Pharisee: Why dost thou eat and

drink with publicans and sinners?

They that are in health need not a

physician, but they that are ill.

For I came not to call the

just,..

..but sinners.

Pharisee: If thou wilt them do

penance, why eatest thou with them?

I will have mercy and not sacrifice.

Pharisee: Why do we Pharisees fast?

Why do John's disciples..

..fast? Why do you not follow

their example too?

Can the children of the bridegroom mourn,

as long as the bridegroom is with them?

But the days will come, when the

bridegroom shall be taken away from them,

..and then they shall fast.

But religion is not made

of new things!

And no man drinking old wine hath

presently a mind to new:

for he saith: The old is better.

- Priest: Baruch.

- Faithful: Baruch.

(WHISPERING)

Man: When can we speak to him?

There he is.

Man: Peace be with thee, Master.

Blessed be the name of the Eternal.

Man: We come in the name

of John the Baptist..

..from the fortress of Machaerus.

We could speak with him.

They spoke to him, they saw him.

They come from Machaerus,..

..they saw the Baptist.

John?

Yes, they also spoke to him.

It is he who sent them.

Man: He sent us to ask you

this, for many rumours..

..about thee come to him.

And some crieth scandal.

Therefore, in his name, we ask thee:

"Art thou he that art to come,.."

"or look we for another?"

Go and relate to John what

you have heard and seen.

The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers...

The poor have the gospel preached to

them. And blessed is he that..

..shall not be scandalized in me.

Here, for your long journey.

It is all we have.

Thank you, brothers.

- Good bye.

- Good bye.

All: Good bye.

There is a corn field,

let us go plucking!

Let us go!

Lord, how can John the Baptist

doubt of thee?

He, who said of thee:

"Behold the lamb of God"?

What went ye out into the

desert to see?

A reed shaken with the wind?

A man clothed in soft garments?

No? But what went you out to see?

A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and

more than a prophet.

This is he of whom it is written:

"Behold I send my angel..

"..before thy face, who shall

prepare thy way before thee."

For I say to you:

Amongst those that are born of men, there

is not a greater prophet than John.

But he that is the lesser

in the kingdom of God..

..is greater than he.

They did doubt him also and

now he is shut in..

..as if he were a thief.

Whereunto then shall I liken

the men of this generation?

They are like to children sitting

in the marketplace and speaking..

.one to another and saying:

We have piped to you,

and you have not danced:

we have mourned,

and you have not wept.

For John the Baptist came..

neither eating bread nor

drinking wine. And you say:..

he is mad. I am come eating

and drinking,..

..and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton

and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans

and sinners.

Man: Shame! Doing work on the

Sabbath!

Andrew: What? Doing Work?

Man: Were not you plucking corn

in the field?

Andrew: Yes.

Behold thy disciples do that which is

not lawful to do on the sabbath days.

Have you not read what David did when he

was hungry, and they that were with him?

How he entered into the house of God,

and did eat the loaves of proposition

which was not lawful to

eat but for the priests?

And if you knew what this meaneth:

I will have mercy, and not sacrifice

you would never have

condemned the innocent.

The sabbath was made for man,

and not man for the sabbath.

Therefore the Son of man

is Lord of the sabbath also.

It is time to stop this.

It hath overflowed.

This man standeth for a

perpetual insult to the law.

He breaketh every rule.

The most serious thing is

that he confoundeth the people.

The people is with him.

It is easy to confound them

pretending to be with them

But not so the law is respected.

From time immemorial, since when

Moses did ratify the Covenant..

..between the Eternal and His

People, the priests have made..

..the people respect the law

and he mocketh the sacred law..

..by telling the people to

judge by themselves and us..

..priest not to judge.

It is night, the Sabbath is over.

We may eat.

Yea, in a while. We must

ensnare him..

..and inform Herod's guard

and the Great Council.

This scandal must stop.

Blessed be the night that alloweth

men and animals to rest.

Blessed be the Eternal

Who did the Covenant with Moses.

Blessed be the name of the Eternal

always worthy of praises.

Blessed be the praises

that rise towards the Eternal,..

..Who gave us the grace to

interpret holy law.

He who you call Master doth not

seem to approve the works

..of the law and us Pharisees,

yet he claims to be..

..a respecter of the law.

How can he respect the law..

..and not those to whom

the Eternal untrusted it?

My Master saith: "The disciple

is not above the master".

Thus he sheweth that he respecteth

priests, scribes, and Pharisees.

But my Master also saith:

"Every disciple shall be perfect.."

"if he be as his master."

And with this he sheweth

respect for all mankind.

As our father Moses

taught us,..

..blessed be his name for ever.

But some say he suggests

he is the son of God.

And that would be blasphemy.

Thou knowest Scripture

better than I do.

But is it not in Psalm 86 that the

Eternal says "I have said: You are gods"?

And is it not true that, in the

name of God, we are all brothers..

..for we are all children

of one Father?

(WOMAN CRYING)

Woman: Put the children away.

Girl: Away, away!

This man, if he were if a prophet,

would know surely who and..

..what manner of woman this is that

toucheth him, that she is a sinner.

Jesus: I have somewhat to say

to thee.

Pharisee: Say it.

A certain creditor had two debtors:

The one owed five hundred

pence and the other fifty.

And whereas they had not wherewith

to pay, he forgave them both.

Which therefore of the two loveth him most?

He to whom he forgave most.

Rightly. Dost thou see this

woman? I entered into thy house:

..thou gavest me no water for my feet.

But she..

..with tears hath washed my feet;

and with her hairs hath wiped them.

Jesus: My head with oil thou

didst not anoint.

..But she with ointment

hath anointed my feet.

Wherefore many sins are forgiven her,

because she hath loved much.

Wilt thou have some?

How canst thou boast

to be happier than I?

Behold thee. Thou art in prison,

fasting, in fetters.

Thou hast lost freedom.

Behold me. I am rich. I like

this fruit and I eat it.

I like a woman and I take her.

Thou insultest me and I put

thee in prison.

What sayest thou?

Yea, thou art powerful,

but not free thereby.

Of us two thou art the slave.

Thou art mad.

Only a madman can say that he

is free with chains at his wrists.

And only a madman can say he is

free with a crown on his head.

- Thou shalt not dare to speak so.

- Why?

No one hath the liberty

to speak to me like that.

I do. Because I am free.

Reflect a little.

What canst thou do to punish me?

Taking my life away?

I have no fear for the

Kingdom of Heaven awaits for me.

Keeping me prisoner?

What matters that I be in chains,

if my spirit is free?

No, Tetrarch, I shall be

free, not thou.

Thou hast a crown and obeyest

the orders it gives to thee.

Is that my crown ordering me

to speak to thee?

No, perhaps it is the

man under the crown.

In fact, we do not talk often.

We talk all the times I

and my crown want to.

No, we talk all the

times I want to.

If I did not want to answer thee,

I would not answer thee.

Then why dost thou answer me?

I already told thee.

Because thou art also a man and

I answer the man, as man to man.

Because all men are brothers,

all equal. Dost thou understand?

There are no differences.

Mary: Here, take.

Mary: Good, do so, come!

The kingdom of heaven is

likened to a man that sowed..

..good seed in his field. But while

men were asleep, his enemy came..

..and oversowed cockle

among the wheat and went his way.

And when the blade was sprung up,

and had brought forth fruit,..

..then appeared also the cockle. And the

servants of the good man of the house

coming said to him. Sir, didst thou

not sow good seed in thy field?

Whence then hath it cockle?

And he said to them: An enemy hath done this.

And the servants said to him:

Wilt thou that we go and gather it up?

And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the

cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it.

Suffer both to grow until the harvest,

and in the time of the harvest I will

say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle,

and bind it into bundles to burn,

but the wheat gather ye

into my barn.

Again, to what shall we liken

the kingdom of God?

The kingdom of heaven is like

to leaven,

which a woman took and hid

in three measures of meal,

until the whole was leavened.

And when was it leavened?

- The woman hid it....

- Look, a small boat.

How beautiful is that small boat!

...She put it into the oven and it

became a big, beautiful, fragrant loaf.

And where is the kingdom of heaven?

It is on this earth, my love.

Take more!

It is here, but not all know,

because men..

..have forgotten how

to be good.

For example, they study the Lord's

law, as thou dost..

..who art a little man,

but adults forget.

When all have remembered

to be good..

..and wish well one another, then

there will be the kingdom of heaven.

And how will the

kingdom of heaven be?

It will be beautiful. Each vineyard

shall have a thousand shoots..

..and each shoot

a thousand clusters.

And each cluster shall have

a thousand grapes.

If thou sowest a seed,

in the same day..

..a beautiful golden ear will spring up

and on each day that..

..a child is born, his mother will not

cry bringing him forth.

The stars, the Moon, and the Sun

will shine all together.

Then most sweet rivers of

milk and honey will flow.

Here, on this earth?

Yes, remember always this

most important secret.

It is enough that all

really love one another.

that there be no enemies.

And then...

Mary and child: And then

most sweet rivers..

..of milk and honey will flow.

Jesus: The kingdom of heaven

is like to a net.

Andrew: The kingdom of heaven

is like to a net.

Peter: The kingdom of heaven

is like to a net.

The kingdom of heaven

is like to a net..

..cast into the sea, and gathering

together of all kinds of fishes.

..Which, when it was filled, they drew out,

and sitting by the shore, they chose out..

..the good into vessels,

but the bad they cast forth.

So shall it be at the end of the world.

Apostles: So shall it be at the

end of the world.

(SALOME SINGS)

Of all the gifts I received

today, thy homage was..

..the most unexpected and appreciated.

Ask me whatsoever thou wilt.

And I shall give it to thee.

Gold, jewels, silk,

whatever thou wilt.

What shall I ask?

I want nothing.

Thou must ask something.

Thou oughtest not to offend Herod.

What?

Ask not something expensive,

lest thou seem greedy.

Ask something that may

be a favour also for him.

- Ask for the head of the Baptist.

- The head of the Baptist?

The head of the Baptist,

my lord.

Man 1: Thou didst promise, Herod.

Man 2: Thou gavest thy word.

Man 3: Let us kill the fast

in a feast day.

He offended thee, my lord.

He offended thy crown.

He offended us.

It is a shame that he is still alive.

Thus doest thou

pay homage to thy king?

Blessed be the King of kings,

the Most High, the Eternal.

Kneel before thy king!

(CRIES OF WOMEN)

(SALOME CRIES)

(angry) Everyone out! Stop!

Mary: Blessed be the name

of God, now and forever.

That a great peace from heaven

and life be upon us all..

..and upon all Israel.

Say: ''Amen''.

All: Amen.

Mary: My help is from the Lord,

who made heaven and earth.

He Who maketh peace on high,

may He give peace also to us.

Mary: And say: "Amen".

All: Amen.

Man 1: Thus it happened.

Man 2: They beheaded him

during the banquet.

It was Herod's birthday,

but they say it was not..

..by the Tetrarch's will,

but that Herodias's daughter,..

..demanded the Baptist's

head, ever blessed be..

..his name.

Man 3: And they give it to

her on a silver dish.

We gave him burial,

then we came to you.

Man 3: You ought to know it. If they

killed him, perhaps you also..

..are in danger.

Woman: What will be of us?

What will be of him?

Woman: Soldiers will come

to take us, they will persecute us.

Man 4: We must tell the people.

Let them choose what to do.

Mary: Perhaps it is dangerous

to remain here all together.

Mary: The people must know.

(INDISTINCT VOICES)

Man 1 : I am afraid.

I shall take my family away.

Man 1 : I dare not to follow him.

Man 2: What will you do who

have been the closest to him?

Man 3: What are Peter, John,

and Judas doing?

Man 3: Andrew, James of Zebedee,

Peter, Matthew, Philip, Judas,..

..Nathanael, Simon the Cananean,

Thomas, Thaddeus, James of Alpheus

Woman: We will go far away,

because the children...

Do not think that I am come to

destroy the law, or the prophets.

I am not come to destroy,

but to fulfil.

For unless your justice abound more

than that of the scribes..

..and Pharisees, you shall not enter

into the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard that it

was said to them of old?

Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill,

shall be in danger of the judgment.

Whosoever is angry with his brother, shall

be in danger..

..of the judgment. And whosoever

shall say to his brother,

Raca, shall be in danger of the council.

And whosoever shall say, Thou fool,

shall be in danger of hell fire.

If therefore thou offer thy gift at

the altar, and there thou remember

that thy brother hath anything against thee;

leave there thy offering

.. before the altar, and go first to be

reconciled to him.

And then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.

If thy brother sin,..

..reprove him: and if he do penance,

forgive him. And if he sin against thee

..seven times in a day, and seven times in a

day be converted unto thee, saying: I repent

..forgive him.

Apostle: How often shall my

brother offend against me,..

..and I forgive him? till seven times?

I say not to thee, till seven times; but

till seventy times seven times.

(FIRE CRACKLING

AND WIND GUSTS)

You have heard that it was said to them of old,

thou shalt not forswear thyself:

..but thou shalt perform

thy oaths to the Lord.

But I say to you not to swear at all,

But let your speech be..

..yea, yea: no, no.

and that which is over

and above these, is of evil.

You know the other commandment

of the Father:

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

But I say to you, that whosoever

shall look on a woman to lust

after her, hath already committed adultery

with her in his heart.

And it hath been said, Whosoever shall put

away his wife, let him give her

a bill of divorce. But I say

to you, that whosoever

shall put away his wife,

excepting the cause,

..maketh her to commit adultery: and

he that shall marry her..

..that is put away for sinning,

committeth adultery.

Again you have heard that it hath

been said: An eye for an eye,

and a tooth for a tooth. But I say

to you not to resist evil

But if one strike thee on

thy right cheek, turn to him..

..also the other:

And if he will contend with thee in

judgment, and take away thy coat,

let go thy cloak also unto him.

Give to him that asketh of thee

..and from him that would borrow

of thee turn not away.

All things therefore whatsoever you would

that men should do to you, do you also to them.

For this is the law and the prophets.

You have heard that it hath been said,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour,

and hate thy enemy. But I say to you,

Love your enemies:

do good to them that hate you:

Bless them that curse you

and pray for them that calumniate you.

For if you love them that love you

what reward shall you have?

do not even the publicans this?

(BIRDS CHIRPING)

- Will you also go away?

- To whom shall we go?

Thou hast the words of eternal life.

And we all believe..

..that thou art the Holy One of God.

If any man will come after me,

let him deny himself,

..and take up his cross, and follow me.

Take up my yoke upon you,

and learn of me,

And you shall find rest to your souls.

For my yoke is sweet..

..and my burden light.

Jesus: Blessed are the poor,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are the meek:

for they shall possess the land.

Blessed are they that mourn:

for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are they that hunger

and thirst after justice:

..for they shall have their fill.

Blessed are the merciful:

for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the clean of heart:

they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they

shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they that suffer

persecution for justice' sake:

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye when they shall revile you,

and persecute you, and

speak all that is evil against you, untruly

..for my sake: be glad and rejoice

for your reward

..is very great in heaven.

For so they persecuted the

prophets that were before you.

Jesus: Behold I send you as sheep

in the midst of wolves.

Shall we separate, Lord?

The harvest indeed is great, but

the labourers are few.

Pray ye therefore the Lord of the

harvest, that he send forth labourers.

Master, shall we be able to

fulfil the mandate thou gavest to us?

We shall repeat thy words,

broadcast the seed among the peoples,

..as thou hast done with us,

but what givest thou to us..

..to relieve us along the way?

Take nothing for your journey,

neither staff,

..nor scrip, nor bread, nor money;

Behold the birds of the air,

for they neither sow,

..nor gather into barns: and

your heavenly Father feedeth them.

Consider the lilies of the field.

They labour not, neither do they spin.

But not even Solomon in all his glory..

..was arrayed as one of these.

God loveth the poor and theirs

will be the kingdom of heaven.

There was a certain rich man

who was clothed in purple

and feasted sumptuously every day.

A certain beggar, named Lazarus,

..who lay at his

gate, full of sores,..

..Desiring to be filled with the crumbs

that fell from the rich man's table.

Peter: He was so full of sores

that even the dogs came..

..and licked his sores.

But not even once, the rich man..

..had mercy of him. And it came

to pass that poor Lazarus died.

Peter: He was carried by the

angels into Abraham's bosom.

And the rich man also died:

and he was buried in hell

And lifting up his eyes

when he was in torments,

he saw our father Abraham

afar off and Lazarus in his bosom:

And he cried: Father Abraham,

have mercy on me and send Lazarus,

that he may dip the tip of his

finger in water to cool my tongue:

for I am tormented in this flame.

And Abraham said to him: Son,

remember that thou didst receive

good things in thy lifetime,

and likewise Lazarus evil things:

but now, according to justice,

he is comforted

and thou art tormented.

Andrew: One day, while we were

following the Master in Galilee,

..to him cometh a rich young man.

He appeared rich from his luxurious

clothes, his costly sandals,..

..his perfumed hair. He was

moved and certainly..

..had heard the teachings of

our Master.

He cometh before Jesus and kneeling

kisseth the fringes of his garment.

Good Master, he said to him, what shall

I do to possess life everlasting?

And the Master said to him: Why

dost thou call me good? None is good

but God alone Who is in heaven.

But if thou wilt enter

into life, keep the commandments.

Thou knowest the commandments:

Thou shalt not kill

Thou shalt not commit adultery:

Thou shalt not steal: Thou shalt not bear false

witness: Honour thy father and mother.

Thou shalt not do wrong.

Just so. The young man saith to

my Master:

All these have I kept from my youth,

what is yet wanting to me?

Jesus looketh into his eyes:

"If thou wilt be perfect,"

He saith, "go sell what thou

hast, and give to the poor"

"thou shalt have treasure in

heaven: and come, follow me."

Do you know what happened?

That good young man,

hearing those words, he was

saddened, he looked at the Master,

tears almost came to his eyes,

then he turned his back..

..and went away, do you know why?

Because he was very rich..

..and had many things.

A rich man shall hardly enter

into the kingdom of heaven.

The good shepherd giveth

his life for his sheep.

But the hireling and he

that is not the shepherd,

whose own the sheep are not, seeth

the wolf coming flieth:

And letteth the wolf cast and scatter

the sheep.

I am the good shepherd:

and I know mine

..and mine know me.

As the Father knoweth me,

and I know the Father:

and I lay down

my life for my sheep.

And other sheep I have

that are not of this fold:

them also I must bring.

Woman 1 : Juda and John

returned last night.

They were so tired that

they did not even eat.

Woman 2: They arrived

at Cana of Galilee.

Woman 3: Yes, I know. It was

there that for the first time

..I heard of the Master.

Woman 4: Mary, hath

thy son returned?

Mary: No, not yet.

Child: Welcome, Rabbi, we

were waiting for thee.

Master.

Master.

James, I am glad to see thee.

So am I.

Child: Rabbuni!

Scribe: I am a doctor of

the law and since childhood

..I dedicated myself to the study

of our holy writ.

I heard thee speaking many times

and thy word caused me to trust.

Therefore I ask thee one question

only, simple and difficult.

what must I do to possess

eternal life?

Which is the great commandment

in the law?

What is written in the law?

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with thy whole heart

and with thy whole soul and

with all thy strength

and with all thy mind:

and thy neighbour as thyself.

There is no other commandment

greater than these.

This do: and thou shalt live.

Another question:

who is my neighbour?

Listen, a certain man went

down from Jerusalem..

..to Jericho and fell among robbers,

who having wounded him went away,

..leaving him half dead.

And it chanced, that a certain priest

..went down the same way:

but passed by.

Jesus: In like manner also a Levite

saw him and passed by.

But a certain Samaritan, being

on his journey, seeing him,

was moved with compassion.

And going up to him, bound up..

.. his wounds, pouring

in oil and wine:

and setting him upon his

own beast, brought him

..to an inn and

took care of him.

And the next day he took out two

pence and gave to the host and said:

Take care of him; and whatsoever thou shalt

spend over and above, I will repay thee.

Which of these three, in thy

opinion, was neighbour

to him that

fell among the robbers?

He that shewed mercy to him.

Go, and do thou in like manner.

(INDISTINCT VOICES)

Jesus: If any man will come after

me, let him deny himself.

I am come to cast fire on the earth.

And what will I, but that

it be kindled?

Think ye, that I am come

to give peace on earth?

I tell you, no;

but separation.

For there shall be from henceforth

five in one house divided:

Three against two,

and two against three.

The father shall be divided against

the son and the son against his father:

The daughter against her mother and

the mother against the daughter.

The daughter-in-law against the mother-in-law

and the servants against the master.

What king, about to go to make

war against another king,

doth not first sit down and

think whether he be able

with ten thousand, to meet him that, with

twenty thousand, cometh against him?

So likewise every one of

you that doth not renounce..

..all that he possesseth

cannot be my disciple.

Wide is the gate

that leadeth to destruction,

..and many there are who go in

thereat. How narrow is the gate,

that leadeth to life: and few

there are that find it!

(RELIGIOUS SONG)

- Man: Master!

- Child: Rabbi! - Man: Rabbi!

Priest: Through the fruits of

the earth, the Eternal sheweth.

..His good will towards

the chosen people, o Israel.

Faithful (in chorus): Sing, O Israel,

the praises of the Eternal.

Priest: Green of shoots is

the vineyard, heavy with juice,..

..rich clusters hang from

the bowers.

Priest: Let us raise tents

of branches like our fathers..

..and thank the Eternal.

Faithful (in chorus): Blessed

be the name of the Eternal forever.

Priest: Into the city on the feast

day, let us go, O Israel,..

..let the trumpets sound,

let Hosanna rise high.

Let the joy for the gifts of

the Lord break into our breasts.

Faithful (in chorus): Blessed

be the name of the Eternal forever.

Priest: Pure is the water

from the fountain of Siloe.

Pure spring water, as pure

is our heart.

With pure water, we shall

sprinkle the altar of the Lord,..

..singing His praises.

Faithful (in choir): May the Eternal

be always blessed,..

..worthy of praises forever.

Faithful: Blessed be

the name of the Eternal.

Faithful: Blessed be

the name of the Eternal.

If any man thirst,

let him come to me and drink.

Rivers of living water shall flow

for him that believeth in me.

How dares he to speak of the law,

as if he knew letters?

Yet all know that

he never learned.

It should not be difficult

to shut his mouth.

What I say of the Eternal

is not mine,..

..but his that sent me.

If any man will do the will of him

..he shall know of the

doctrine, whether it be of God,

..or whether I speak of myself.

He that speaketh of himself

seeketh his own glory:

but he that seeketh the

glory of him that sent him,..

..he is true and must be believed.

Did not Moses give you the law,

..and yet none of you keepeth the law?

Judge not according to the appearance:

but judge just judgment.

Prithee, Master. Thou sayest:

"None of you keepeth the law."

While here there is none who

did not come quite out

..respect and observance

of the law. There is none,..

..I am certain, that doth not pray

in the temple according to the law.

None that doth not do the ritual

washings or doth not pay the tithe.

Yet thou sayest that none of

us keepeth the law.

Woe to you, Pharisees, because

you tithe mint and rue..

and rue and every herb and pass

over judgment and the charity of God.

Now these things you ought to have done,

and not to leave the other undone.

Woe to you, because you love the

uppermost seats in the synagogues

..and salutations in the marketplace.

Woe to you, because you are as

sepulchres that appear not:

and men that walk over are not aware.

In saying these things, thou

reproachest us lawyers also.

Jesus: Woe to you lawyers also,

because you load men with burdens

which they cannot bear and you yourselves

touch not the packs with one of your fingers.

Woe to you who build the

monuments of the prophets:

and your

fathers killed them.

Truly you bear witness that

you consent to their doings.

For they indeed killed them:

and you build their sepulchres.

For this cause also the wisdom of God

said: I will send to them prophets

and apostles: and some of them

they will kill and persecute.

That the blood of all the prophets which

was shed from the foundation of the world

may be required of this generation.

Woe to you lawyers, for you have

taken away the key of knowledge.

Jesus: You yourselves have not entered in:

and those that were entering in,

you have hindered.

There was too much people, arresting

him would have risen a tumult.

And many would have defended him.

High Priest: From what

you say, that man..

..insulteth the law and

the watchers of the law.

Man: He hath never been accused of anything,

no man hath brought witness against him.

Man: And I with what authority..

(angry) Have you gone mad too?

No man in the great council and no man

of the Pharisees believeth in him.

But only the people of the land!

Who do not know the law

and are accursed!

Doth our law condemn a man

without hearing him first?

And without examining his works?

Comest thou from Galilee too?

Art thou his follower?

Art thou from his village?

Examine Scripture and

open well thy eyes.

No prophet cometh out

of Galilee.

High Priest: Enough!

This thing must stop.

And I believe that also

the Romans will not tolerate...

(irate) He is a false teacher!

He stirreth up the people.

He must be ensnared.

Man (shouting): Stand aside!

Touch her not!

Man: This woman is impure,

infected, and unclean

..because of her sins.

All (shouting): Shame!

Man: She is infected, infected!

(ADULTEROUS WOMAN CRYING)

Master, this woman was even

now taken in adultery.

Moses, blessed be forever,

commanded us to stone..

such a one. But what

sayest thou?

(ADULTEROUS WOMAN CRYING)

Master, here is the woman's husband,

here are the witnesses,..

..here are we who are called

by the Eternal to judge,..

..but we propose the case to thee.

What must our

judgement be?

He that is without sin among you,

let him first cast a stone at her.

(ADULTEROUS WOMAN CRYING)

Woman, where are they that accused

thee? Hath no man condemned thee?

No man, Lord.

Neither will I condemn thee.

Jesus: Go, and now sin no more.

- Thou sayest thou wert blind.

- Yea.

How cometh thou seest now?

That man that is called Jesus

made clay and anointed my eyes

..and send me to the pool of Siloe

to wash them.

I went and I washed.

- And then?

- Then what?

Before I did not see and now I see.

What sayest thou of

him that hath opened thy eyes?

What shall I say?

He is a holy man, a prophet.

Hear, you two.

Is this boy, who you say

was born blind, your son?

- Yea, certainly.

- He is our son, yea.

How then doth he now see?

We know that this is our son

and that he was born blind.

But how he now seeth..

Then?

we know not: or who hath opened

his eyes, we know not.

Father: Ask himself.

He knoweth.

He knoweth. He is of age.

Knowest thou that he whom thou

callest a prophet is a sinner?

Yea, he is a sinner, I tell thee.

If he be a sinner, I know not. One thing I

know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.

Now thou mayest go, but remember

that that man is a sinner.

We are the disciples of Moses,

we know that God spoke to Moses

..and for that we are his

disciples, but as to this man,

..we know not

from whence he is.

And he hath opened my eyes!

Come, come.

What were you saying now?

We were... discussing. We asked ourselves

who would be the greatest..

..in the kingdom of heaven.

Whosoever will be first in

the kingdom of God..

..shall be the last of all,

shall be the servant of the others.

Andrew: Teach us to pray.

When you are praying, speak

not much, as the heathens.

For they think that in their

much speaking they may be heard.

Be not you therefore like to them for your

Father knoweth what is needful for you,

before you ask him.

Peter: teach us to

pray, as John the Baptist..

..also taught his disciples.

Our Father who art in heaven...

Apostle: Our Father who

art in heaven...

...hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come,..

..thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven.

Apostles:...hallowed be thy

name,..

..thy kingdom come,..

..thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven.

Jesus: Give us this day our daily

bread and forgive us

..our debts, as we also

forgive our debtors.

Apostles: Give us this

day our daily bread..

..and forgive us our debts,

as we also forgive..

..our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Apostles: And lead us not

into temptation,..

..but deliver us from evil.

Do you understand whither we have come?

They say he raised a dead man.

Lazarus of Bethany.

If people begin to believe

news like that,..

..this man will gain

such power that he will

..be able to ask whatsoever

of the people.

Even if he will not ask

anything,..

..his preaching is dangerous.

It can raise a tumult.

The people, especially those of the land,

feel to be entitled,..

..for he giveth them the right

to judge by themselves what

..be right and what not.

All this cannot

be pleasing to the Romans.

Above all he can kindle

the the souls and make the people,..

..encouraged by him, raise

tumults and rebellions.

Lazarus of Bethany, you said?

But Bethany is one step from

Jerusalem and is he there?

Will he perhaps come to the

city for the Holy Pasch?

Blessed be the name of Moses.

I heard that he and

his are afraid.

I do not believe that they

will come to the city.

All know that in this time

it is full of Roman soldiers.

The garrison is full.

However, yea, if he dared...

if he dared, we should

think and decide.

It is expedient that one man should die

and that the whole nation perish not.

- Apostle 1: Will it be wise?

- Apostle 2: Why will he go?

They all say that they have

accused him and want to kill him.

The order to arrest him hath

been given by the High Priest.

- Apostle 3: Lord, let us not go.

- Apostle 4: What will happen?

Behold, we go up to Jerusalem;

and all things shall be accomplished..

..which were written by the prophets

concerning the Son of man.

For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles

and shall be mocked and insulted..

and spit upon. And after they have

scourged him, they will put him to death.

Jesus: Andrew, Thomas!

There you shall find an a**..

tied and a colt with her.

Loose them and bring them to me.

And if any man shall say anything to you,

say ye that Jesus hath need of them.

And forthwith he will let them go.

Man 1 : Blessed is he that

cometh in the name of the Lord!

(VOICES OF CHILDREN)

Boy 1 : Hosanna!

Woman: King of the poor.

Man 2: Blessed!

Old man: Deliverer of the hungry!

Old man: Hosanna, son of David!

(VOICES OF THE CROWD)

Man 3: Hosanna!

Man 4: Blessed be the kingdom

that cometh from our father David!

Boy 2: Blessed!

Man 5: Right father!

All (with enthusiasm):

Hosanna! Blessed!

(ALL SAY HOSANNA TO JESUS)

Boy 3: Rabbuni! Rabbuni!

Boy 3: Rabbi! Rabbi!

Boy 3: King of Israel!

Pharisee 1 : Make them hold their peace!

Have you become mad?

Pharisee 1: Stop these blasphemies!

Pharisee 2: Shout not!

Will you ruin us? Make them hold their peace!

Peace? If we could make them

hold their peace, the stones..

..will cry out his glory.

(CROWD CONTINUES TO CRY)

He hath come.

I saw him. The people

cheer him as a king.

They are all with him! I have seen.

Come, Susanna!

Is he well? Whither is he going now?

And the Roman soldiers?

I saw them not.

He is going to the temple.

Come, come!

This thing must be stopped.

The people will make him king!

It is true. Even they call him king.

The Romans are always vigilant.

A repression could break out.

Blood would flow through the streets

of the holy city yet another time.

We must arrest and make him be silent.

Yea, we must arrest him.

But not during the feast, nor before

the people, or a tumult will arise.

Behold him.

Pharisee: Art not thou of those

of Jesus of Nazareth?

- Yea.

- Where is he now?

In the temple, as always,

teaching the gospel.

Hast thou followed him a long time?

We know thou knowest the law.

We want to speak with thee.

- Peter: Thank thee.

- Seller: Thank you.

- John: Judas will come and pay thee.

- Seller: 'Tis well.

I took the lamb, the bread,

the herbs, and the fruit.

- Judas: Well.

- Mark: We can go.

- Hail, John.

- Hail, Mark.

- Where shall I put the blessed bread?

- There.

Behold them, come.

(VOICES FROM THE CROWD OUTSIDE)

Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

What I do, thou knowest not now;

but thou shalt know hereafter.

Thou shalt never wash my feet

If I wash thee not, thou

shalt have no part with me.

Lord!

Know you what I have done to

you?

You call me Master and Lord.

If then I being your Lord and Master,

have washed your feet; you

also ought to wash..

..one another's feet.

For I have given you an example, that

as I have done to you, so you do also.

Amen, amen, I say to you: The servant

is not greater than his lord:

Neither is the apostle greater

than he that sent him.

If you know these things, you

shall be blessed if you do them.

- One of you shall betray me.

- Lord, who is it?

He it is to whom I shall

reach bread dipped.

That which thou dost, do quickly.

Take ye and eat. This is my

body, which is given for you.

Take and rink ye all of this.

It is the chalice of the New Testament.

It is my blood, which shall be shed

for many unto remission of sins.

Do this for a commemoration of me.

Little children, yet a

little while I am with you.

You shall seek me.

And as I said to the Jews:

Whither I go you cannot come; so I

say to you now.

A new commandment I give unto you:

That you love one another,

as I have loved you, that

you also love one another.

By this shall all men know

that you are my disciples.

Lord, we know not whither thou goest.

And how can we know the way?

I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

My peace I give unto you.

Not as the world giveth, do I give unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled:

You have heard that I said to you:

I go away, and I come unto you.

As the Father hath loved me, I also

have loved you. Abide in my heart.

If you keep my commandments,

you shall abide in my love.

As I also have kept

my Father's commandments..

and do abide in his love.

This is my commandment!

That you love one another, as I have

loved you.

Greater love than this no man hath, that

a man lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends, if you

do the things that I command you.

I will not now call you servants: for the

servant knoweth not what his lord doth.

But I have called you friends. Because

all things, whatsoever I have heard

of my Father, I have made known to you.

I command you that you love one another.

If the world hate you, know ye

that it hath hated me before you.

If you had been of the world,

the world would love its own.

You are not of the world, but I have

chosen you because of love.

Therefore the world hateth you.

Remember my word that I said to you:

The servant is not greater than his master.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you.

If they have kept my word,

they will keep yours also.

These things have I spoken to you

that you may not be scandalized.

The hour cometh that they will put

you out of the synagogues.

Yea, whosoever killeth you will

think that he doth a service to God.

What is this that he saith to us:

A little while, and you shall not see me:

and again a little while,

and you shall see me?

and, Because I go to the

Father?

Jesus: You shall be made sorrowful,

but your sorrow..

..shall be turned into joy.

A woman, when she is in labour,

hath sorrow, because her hour is come;

but when she hath brought forth the child

she remembereth no more the anguish, for

joy that a man is born into the world.

I came forth from the Father

and am come into the world.

Again I leave the world

and I go to the Father.

These things I have spoken to you,

that in me you may have peace.

In the world you shall have distress. But

have confidence. I have overcome the world.

When I sent you without purse

and scrip and shoes,

did you want anything?

Nothing, Lord.

But now he that

hath a purse, let him take it,

and likewise a scrip:

and he that hath not,

let him sell his coat and buy a sword.

Lord, behold, here are two swords.

It is enough.

Choir leader: If the Lord had

fed us the manna,

..and had not given us the sabbath.

- All (in choir): Dayenu.

If He had given us the Sabbath

and had not brought us..

..before Mount Sinai

- All: Dayenu.

If He had brought us

before Mount Sinai,

and had not given us the law.

- All: Dayenu.

If He had given us the law

and had not brought us

..into the land of Israel..

- All: Dayenu.

If He had brought us

into the land of Israel

..and not built for us the Holy Temple

- All: Dayenu.

How much we must be thankful

to the Lord..

..for the favours he granted to us!

- All: Dayenu.

Jesus: Sit you here.

My soul is sorrowful

even unto death.

Stay you here and watch with me.

My Father, if it be possible,

let this chalice pass from me.

Nevertheless, not as

I will but as thou wilt.

It is enough. The hour is come:

he that will betray me is at hand.

Judas: Master.

Judas: Friend, whereto art thou come?

Whom seek ye?

Man: Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus: I am he. Whom seek ye?

Pharisee: Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus: I have told you that I am he.

Jesus: If therefore you

seek me, let these go their way,

- Soldier 1: Take them all!

- Soldier 2: No, him alone

Jesus: You are come out, as it were to

a robber, with swords

I sat daily in the temple:

and you laid not hands on me.

Soldiers: Back off! Away, away!

Go away!

Apostles: Let him go! Master!

Lord!

Soldiers: Back off!

Apostles: Lord!

Soldiers: Back off!

It happened at oil mill on

Mount Olivet, true?

Mark: They were many,

having swords, lances, staves.

- Knowest whither they brought him?

- Did they catch him alone?

Mark: Yea, him alone. I believe that

John hath gone behind him.

Mark: He was certain that they

would bring him to the Great Council.

Mark: And he went thither.

We were all afraid.

Mark: We fled. And then he said

"Take me alone,.."

"..let the others go".

I have always spoken where

all might hear me.

I have spoken openly to the world. I have

always taught in the synagogue and in the temple,

and in secret I have spoken nothing.

Why askest thou me? Ask them who have

heard what I have spoken unto them.

Behold they know what things I have said.

Soldier: Answerest thou the

high priest so?

If I have spoken false,

give testimony of the false;

but if truth, why strikest thou me?

The witnesses.

(SOLDIER WHISPER)

Soldier: I found no man.

High Priest: What have ye to say

of the prisoner, Jesus of Nazareth?

Witness 1 : He said,

"I will destroy this temple"

"..made with hands and

within three days I will build another.."

"..not made with hands."

Witness 2: He said that he could destroy

the temple and rebuild it.

Witness 3: He said that

he was the son of God.

High Priest: Answerest thou nothing to

the things that are laid to thy charge?

Art thou the Christ then?

I adjure thee by God,

..that thou tell us if thou be

the Christ the Son of God.

Thou hast said it.

He hath blasphemed!

What further need have

we of witnesses?

Behold, now you have heard

the blasphemy. What think you?

(PHARISEE SPITS)

Pharisee (angry): He is guilty of death!

Thank thee.

He hath been questioned by the

Great Council. I was able..

..to enter the court because

I know people.

I let Peter in also,

but we have had few news.

I know that at one moment

they were very busy.

They were looking for witnesses.

For no man may be condemned..

..without at least two witnesses,

but they found not..

..many and it seemeth that the

few whom they found

. .did not agree.

Then the situation..

..must have fallen. It is certain

that they are carrying him to Pilate.

To the Antonia Fortress.

Priest 1: He must listen to us.

Priest 2: It is his interest.

(BLARE OF TRUMPET)

Priest: Behold,

the legate from Rome is coming.

Pilate: I want a concrete

accusation against this man.

Pilate: It is not enough for

me that he blasphemed..

..against your religion.

Rome hath not care if somebody

breaketh the law of your fathers.

Not only this maketh him guilty.

We bring him to thee to shew..

..our friendship.

We caught him inciting

..our people to rebellion

against your government.

He was inviting the people

not to pay the tribute to Caesar.

And he was claiming to be the king and Messiah.

Hast thou heard what

they say against thee?

Art thou the king of the Jews?

Sayest thou this thing of thyself,

or have others told it thee of me?

They came to me.

Thy own nation delivered thee

into my hands that I may judge..

..whether thou be guilty or innocent.

I have nothing to accuse thee.

Thy people, of thy blood and

religion, delivered thee up to me.

What do I know?

Am I a Jew?

Thy nation delivered thee

into my hands.

What hast thou done?

Wilt thou truly be king?

My kingdom is not of this world.

If my kingdom were of this world,

my servants would certainly strive..

that I should not be delivered.

But my kingdom is not of this world.

Then thou art not a king.

Thou sayest that I am a king.

For this was I born and grown..

.. in the world; that I should

give testimony to the truth.

Every one that is of

the truth heareth my voice.

(ironic voice) The truth.

What is truth?

I find no cause in this man.

You brought him to be judged.

Certainly you collected proofs.

Pilate: True accusations.

And certainly you examined

his offences.

As far as it regardeth me

personally and as far as..

..it regardeth my authority

and legal power,..

..You have presented unto

me this man

..one that perverteth the people.

And behold I,

having examined him before you,

find no cause in this man,

find no cause in this man, in

those things wherein you accuse him.

Behold, by the law of Rome,

nothing worthy..

..of death is done to him.

I will chastise him

therefore and release him.

Priest: Thou dost not understand

for what danger he standeth.

He stirreth up the people,

teaching throughout all Judea,

.. beginning from Galilee

to this place.

He hath mad proselytes.

They worship him as a holy man

because his spread a rumour..

..that he worketh miracles, healing

the sick and raising the dead.

Pharisee: The people

tried to make him king.

Priest: When he entered into

Jerusalem, a few days ago,..

..they tributed to him

a true triumph.

In truth, it was his disciples who

framed the business, nevertheless..

And then, there is the affair of the tributes

This man hath stirred the people..

..not to pay the tribute to Rome.

Pharisee (whispering): We must

call the people.

(INDISTINCT VOICES)

Pharisee: Crucify him! He must die!

Pharisee: He hath blasphemed.

He hath raised a tumult!

Pharisee 1 : He is an enemy of Rome!

He insulteth the authority of Caesar!

Pharisee 2: Let justice be done! He is a

false teacher! He stirreth up the people!

Pharisee 3: He is a mad man.

(CROWD UPROARS)

Thou must convince thyself. Behold,

how many witnesses. Thou must understand.

Pilate: Behold the Man.

Pilate: Behold the Man.

Is not enough what he hath

already suffered?

All (shouting): No! Crucify him!

Let justice be done! He must die!

Whence art thou?

Speakest thou not to me? Knowest

thou not that I have power to crucify thee,

..and I have power to release thee?

Thou shouldest not have any

power against me, unless..

.. it were given thee from above.

Therefore, he that hath delivered me..

..to thee hath the greater sin.

As it is your custom that a a

prisoner be released upon the Pasch,..

..Whom will you that I release to You:

Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?

All (shouting): Barabbas!

What evil hath this man done?

All: Crucify him!

But Barabbas is a murderer!

(ALL SHOUT TOGETHER)

Man: We want Barabbas free!

I am innocent of this blood.

Look you to it.

His blood be upon us and

upon our children.

Behold your king.

All (shouting): Death to him!

If thou release this man, thou art not

Caesar's friend. For whosoever

..maketh himself a king

speaketh against Caesar.

Shall I crucify your king?

We have no king but Caesar.

(MURMURING)

Crucified, like a Roman slave?

Why? Tell me why.

They know not what they do.

They do not understand.

Mark: They carried him away.

They went out of the other door.

Mark: They want to crucify him.

There are two robbers with him.

Whither did they carry him?

Mark: Outside the city,

outside the walls, to Golgotha.

Quick, let us go.

Mary: No!

Mary: Ah!

(CHILDREN SINGING A RHYME)

(MAGDALEN CRIES)

Woman: Look not! Away!

I obtained permission, but we must

haste to the sepulchre.

Tomorrow is the sabbath and

we shall not be able to bury him.

The sepulchre will be sealed

tonight and will be presided..

..by Roman soldiers.

- This too!

- What has this to do?

What has this to do with him?

Father, forgive them, for they

know not what they do.

Wu must haste.

Magdalen, the linen cloths.

(MAGDALEN CRIES)
